Growing up in a California ranching family, Marsha Karle developed a deep affection for the agricultural landscapes of the Central Valley and the spectacular wilderness settings of the nearby High Sierra, but she soon broadened her enthusiasm for beautiful places. In 1981, she began a career as a national park professional in Denali National Park, Alaska, and over the next 23 years her National Park Service work immersed her in some of North America's most spectacular and beloved places, including Yellowstone (three times), Washington D.C., Everglades, Mount Rushmore, and Pearl Harbor. Her final assignment was an 11-year stint as chief of public affairs in Yellowstone National Park, where wild nature was right at her doorstep.
It was in Yellowstone about 20 years ago that she began carrying a watercolor sketchbook while hiking, skiing, and wildlife-watching. As her passion for art grew, she became the park's representative at the annual Art for the Parks competition in Jackson, Wyoming. She also began a long and fruitful association with Montana artist Susan Blackwood, and has since participated in more than a dozen of Blackwood's classes and workshops.
During Yellowstone's famous 1988 fires, Marsha met nature writer and historian Paul Schullery, and they were married in 1996. Adding another dimension to her art, they have collaborated as artist and author on six books, including Real Alaska: Finding Our Way in the Wild Country (2001), The Rise: Streamside Observations on Trout, Flies, and Fly Fishing (2006), and This High, Wild Country: A Celebration of Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (2010).
Upon her retirement from the National Park Service in 2004, Marsha embarked upon a full-time career as a watercolor artist. She increased her participation in workshops, including with Charles Reid at the Southern Vermont Art Center and with Jean Haines in Hampshire, England. Her study of historic artists whose work she finds especially inspiring has involved pilgrimages to Winslow Homer's studio in Prout's Neck, Maine and to his trademark Adirondack settings; to John Constable's beloved Salisbury; to the iconic "Hill Top" countryside of Beatrix Potter's Lake District; and to many of the American wilderness landscapes so brilliantly portrayed by Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt.
Marsha's work has been juried into several national competitions and featured in many solo shows in her region, including at the Montana State University Library and the Atrium Gallery of the Bozeman Public Library. She has donated dozens of her originals and prints to support the fund-raising efforts of a host of good causes.
